Child abuse accused abandons bail application

Child abuse accused Jonathan Fernando Cupido has abandoned his bail application in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.

The man accused of assaulting a two-year-old boy at a residential complex in Swan Street, Florida on February 10, Jonathan Fernando Cupido, appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court today for his formal bail application hearing..

Appearing on behalf of the accused, Advocate Justice Mogorosi, informed the court today, March 5, that he had received instruction from his client to abandon the bail application.

Cupido was detained after an extensive manhunt following CCTV footage of him severely assaulting the small boy surfaced on social media.

He was on the run for nearly two weeks and was eventually tracked down where he was hiding at a friend’s house in Toekomsrus, Randfontein.

Cupido’s brother and the mother of his child were in court to support him, while the victim’s mother was supported by her sister and various other family members.

Cupido has been remanded into custody and the case has been postponed for further investigation until Tuesday, March 11.
