Police tackle crime head-on during major operation

Roodepoort police are taking the fight to the criminals with another successful high-density crime prevention operation.

Adcock Street was a hive of activity on May 29 as police, JMPD, immigration officers, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and CPF members held a three-pronged high visibility crime prevention operation consisting of a massive roadblock, an anti-illegal mining operation, and a raid of illegal spaza shops and shebeens.

Operation Shanela, meaning ‘sweep’, aimed to tackle criminal activity in high-crime areas and along arterial routes through intensive manpower-dense operations, which seem to be bearing fruit.

This week was no exception, with numerous arrests made during all three of the operation activities.

Police officers descended on the targeted street from about 04:00, putting out traffic cones and setting up the huge roadblock that saw officers from the various law enforcement agencies stop hundreds of vehicles during the course of the morning.

Information gathered at the scene indicated that at least three flagged vehicles were impounded thanks to the deployment of a license plate recognition camera system at the roadblock.

By 11.30, more than 15 people had been arrested just at the roadblock. Information regarding successes from the other activities was not yet available by the time of publication.
