Highway to jail: K9 Unit takes down suspected drug dealer

West Rand K9 Unit spoils the day for the local drug trade.

Members of the West Rand K9 Unit once again disrupted the local drug trade when they arrested a man found in possession of a large quantity of dagga on Albertina Sisulu Road on October 22.

This follows the arrest of a Nigerian national in Florida CBD just weeks ago, when officers seized crystal meth valued at over R600 000.

According to West Rand K9 Unit liaison officer, Warrant Officer Renier Henning, one of their members was driving along Albertina Sisulu Road when he saw a man in a Toyota Yaris travelling east towards the N1 highway in the oncoming lane.

The dagga weighed in at 78.25kg. Photo submitted

“The member made a U-turn and followed the vehicle. He managed to pull the car over, but the occupant fled the moment it stopped,” Henning said.

The suspect ran into a nearby veld, prompting the officer to call for backup.

“Once back-up arrived, officers searched the veld, located the man, and brought him back to the car he had abandoned. Inside the car they found 21 bags of dagga.

“The suspect was arrested and taken to Florida Police Station, where the dagga was weighed. It came to 78.25kg.

“At about R6.50 per gram, it is worth an estimated R508 000.

“We would like to congratulate our members on a job well done,” Henning concluded.
