West Rand K9 Unit makes another huge bust

Police confiscated about R3m worth of crystal meth, ephedrine, and mandrax at a house in Horison.

The West Rand K9 Unit has struck another major blow against drug dealers in Roodepoort and is this afternoon searching a property in Schultz Street after discovering large quantities of crystal meth, ephedrine, and mandrax.

According to Help24 Secure operations manager Quinten Swart, the incident began when Florida police detectives issued a be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) alert for a white VW Golf at about 12:30 today.

“Police wanted to pull over the suspicious vehicle, but it sped away,” he said.

“They gave chase, but the car evaded them.

“Our Tactical Response Unit (TRU) members, Jaundrè Compaan and Leon Mostert, responded to the BOLO and managed to track the car to Louis Botha Avenue in Florida.

“A high-speed chase ensued, during which Leon’s vehicle was pushed off the road by the suspect’s car.

“The members lost sight of the vehicle on Golf Club Terrace and called on ADT Fidelity’s Business Intelligence Unit to help track it.

“It was picked up in the vicinity of Mouton Street, and our members, while patrolling the area, spotted the car pulling into a residential property in Schultz Street.”

Swart said they immediately alerted the West Rand K9 Unit, who responded in record time.

West Rand K9 Unit liaison officer Warrant Officer Renier Henning added that one of their members happened to be nearby and rushed to the scene.

“When the suspect emerged from the car thinking he had gotten away, he noticed the police and security officers outside his gate.

“He immediately grabbed bags from the boot of the car and rushed into the house.

“Police and security officers scaled the gate and chased the suspect inside.

“In the house, police found a foreign man and a South African woman with a significant amount of suspected drugs in their possession.”

These included several bags of crystal meth, about 1 000 mandrax tablets, and a bag of ephedrine — a key ingredient in the manufacture of crystal meth — all with an estimated street value of about R3m.

The suspects were taken to Roodepoort Police Station and are expected to appear in court soon.
