A 36-year-old man was arrested at a house in Roodepoort after he was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and more than 80 rounds of ammunition.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, members of the Gauteng Organised Crime Tracing Team working alongside Police Emergency Services Flexi, followed up on a tip-off about unlicensed firearms at a residence in Roodepoort when they discovered the weapons.
“A team of two police units was mobilised to follow up on information,” says Masondo. “As they searched the house, the police found one AK-47 rifle, one .308 semi-automatic rifle, one magazine and more than 80 live rounds of ammunition.

The man was charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. He is expected to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in due course.
“Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the team for acting swiftly after receiving the information. The firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in the commission of other crimes.”
