Attempted child abduction leaves parents worried

Although investigations are ongoing, this has left many parents in a state of panic and worry about their children's safety.

An incident reported near Randpark High School is currently under investigation by Honeydew police, following concerns about a possible attempted abduction last week.

The reported incident follows growing concerns in the area after parents shared information about a suspicious white panel van, driven by a woman in a blue t-shirt, approaching learners walking home from schools.

According to the Honeydew Community Police Forum (CPF), the incident was reported to have taken place on Wednesday, January 28. The matter gained attention after information about it was shared on social media the next day.

The Honeydew CPF confirmed that police are aware of the incident and that an enquiry has been opened.

“We have engaged with Honeydew police, who have confirmed that an enquiry has been opened and referred to the relevant department for further investigation,” said Michael Steyn from the Honeydew CPF.

Steyn added that local security companies are also assisting by reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to help determine exactly what happened.

“Several local security companies are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to assist with the investigation,” he said.

One parent reported that their child was approached while walking from school, prompting the school to issue a safety warning to parents. The school has since urged parents to speak to their children about stranger danger, avoid learners walking alone, and ensure children waiting for transport remain inside school grounds.

The Honeydew CPF has asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident near Randpark High School, or who has relevant CCTV or dash camera footage, to come forward and share the information with authorities.

“This information is important and can assist with the ongoing investigation,” Steyn said. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
