Burglary and vehicle theft among top crime concerns in Roodepoort during January
Roodepoort CBD and Witpoortjie are among the top hotspots.
Burglary at residential premises and theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles remain among the most common crime concerns in the greater Roodepoort region during January.
Sector Specialised Operations Patrollers (SSOP) recently shared this analysis with residents during a community engagement meeting held on Tuesday, February 3, at the Wilro Park Lions Club.
SSOP chairperson Leon Marinus explained that the report is based on community reporting, incident notifications, and operational observations, and is intended to assist residents with awareness and crime prevention planning.
During January, SSOP recorded awareness of 94 incidents in the greater Roodepoort area. Of these, 68 were property-related incidents, while 26 were violent/ contact-related incidents.
The most commonly reported incidents included:
• 26 burglaries at residential premises
• 23 thefts of motor vehicles and motorcycles
• 12 house robberies
• nine carjackings
• five business robberies
• eight attempted crimes
Marinus added that about 60% of incidents occurred between 15:00 and 23:59, making it the highest-risk time window, with Fridays and Saturdays being the days most commonly associated with reported crime activity.
Based on incident reporting patterns, the following areas were highlighted as recurring hotspots:
Roodepoort CBD, Witpoortjie, Helderkruin, Roodekrans, Wilropark, Horison, Groblerpark, Lindhaven, Goudrand, Tshepisong Phase 7, Princess, Discovery, Westgate, Roodepoort West, and Emnandini.
SSOP encouraged residents to remain vigilant, strengthen household security, and report suspicious activity immediately through the appropriate emergency channels.
