Welties family desperate for relief as water leak worsens

For now, the family continue to deal with the flooding, hoping that their pleas for assistance will not go unheard.

A family residing in Madeliefie Street are frustrated and desperate after enduring a water leak for over five days.

The leak is located outside Nozi Nqabeni’s house and has been flooding her home through to the other side of the road, leaving her and her family unable to move freely around her yard.

All corners of the house are surrounded by water, and the Roodepoort Northside journalist, Neliswa Sibiya, had to take off her shoes and walk barefoot to access the property to witness the amount of damage from the leak.

“When you walk into the yard, a flood of water welcomes you at the gate and as you walk up to where the water enters the yard, you are welcomed by a fountain that overflows into the pool leading to water being distributed all over the yard,” Sibiya said.

Despite reporting the issue to Johannesburg Water (JW), Nqabeni claims that the situation has only worsened.

“Johannesburg Water has messed up with us, causing so much inconvenience. We can’t move around the yard as it is wet everywhere. We are upset with the service we are receiving,” she frustratingly expressed.

According to Nqabeni, JW initially responded to their complaint but only attempted a superficial fix.

“They came pretending to resolve the problem but made things worse,” she added. While they stopped the visible sprinkling of water, she says the leak was never actually repaired. Instead, the water continues to seep out unnoticed, flowing beneath the surface and further damaging her property.

Her yard remains waterlogged, and her swimming pool is now filled with muddy water. Residents have been trying to escalate the issue, but it seems the issue has fallen on deaf ears.

The community is now calling on authorities to intervene urgently before further damage occurs.

The Northsider contacted JW for comment and is still awaiting a formal response which will be published once it is received.
