Residents raise alarm over failing stormwater drainage
Residents brace against deteriorating stormwater drainage that poses safety threats.
Residents living near the intersection of Peter Road, Van Dalen Road South and Van der Kloof Street in Ruimsig say a blocked stormwater drain has left stagnant, foul-smelling water pooling in the area for up to two years.
According to resident Angelika Edwards, the problem centres on a large drain at the intersection that has become clogged with debris, restricting water flow and causing persistent build-up.
“The visual impact is hard to ignore. The drain has been blocked for months, and nothing has been done to solve this issue,” said Edwards.

Edwards said she first logged complaints about the issue two years ago, with no response or lasting solution. She reported the problem again on April 13.
Residents say the water in the drain is dark and slow-moving, while a strong stench has made conditions unpleasant for those living nearby.
Although the blockage has not yet caused major flooding, residents warn that the risk could increase during periods of heavy rain if the issue is not addressed.
Community members have called on municipal authorities to investigate the cause of the blockage and carry out the necessary repairs, saying early intervention could prevent the situation from worsening.
“This needs to be addressed before it becomes a bigger problem. The drain is already affecting the environment around us, and people are being exposed to unsafe conditions,” said resident Thembokuhle Gumede.
Edwards and Gumede said they hope increased attention will lead to swift action and the restoration of proper drainage in the area.
The Roodepoort Northsider contacted the Johannesburg Roads Agency for comment. A follow-up will be published once a response is received.
