Golden Oldie at Floroma Old Aged Home celebrates 104 years
Marjorie Gertrude Symons celebrated her 104th birthday with fellow residents and staff of Floroma Old Aged Home and is currently the oldest member at the home.
A senior citizen of Floroma Old Aged Home celebrated her 104th birthday on July 18 with fellow residents and staff at the home.
Marjorie Gertrude Symons has the honour of celebrating her birthday with the late Nelson Mandela.
While somewhat unresponsive as she struggles with her hearing and speech, she is healthy and young at heart and according to the nurses who have been taking care of her for the last five years now, she is a very loving and friendly person.

“She is one of our easiest people to look after as she is rarely difficult but has her moments. She does get agitated at times and has also lost her hearing and partial sight, which may have contributed to that, but she is a bubbly lady,” Sister Nkulie added.
The staff at the home said that Marjorie never had the opportunity to marry and has no real background of her but knows that she was admitted to the frail care department in 2018 and is currently their oldest resident.
Management, staff, and residents celebrated their oldest member of the home with a tea party and said that they are very proud of her and how far she has come.

Youlanda, who is the manager at Floroma, said it has been a privilege nursing her, ‘she rarely complains and is as sharp as a razor and has a wicked sense of humour’.
According to their website, the home was established in 1953, to provide housing to the elderly residents of Roodepoort, Florida, and Maraisburg and the name Floroma is an acronym derived from the first few letters of the names of the three suburbs of Roodepoort. The home looks after the elderly and has different divisions for people who can still take care of themselves and the frail care side for those who depend on nurses.
