Local crafters set up shop at West Rand Sewing craft market
The craft market day saw local crafters setting up shop to showcase their talents on Ondekkers Road.
July 29 was an exciting day as sewers and embroiders had an opportunity to showcase their creations at the West Rand Sewing Craft Market.
The organisation does embroidery work, sells sewing machines, overlockers, and ironing products, and has been established by Louisa Weideman. The craft market is held once a month – towards the end of every month.

The craft market saw a lot of jewellery, perfumes, beading, knitting, toys, needlework, amigurumi, (which is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures) bags, and other stalls being displayed.
Among these were the stall of Barbara Gouws from BJ Crafts who makes anything from knitting to embroidery and even mosaic arts.

“I do have a love for working with my hands and therefore with my stall today, I am selling kitchen aprons, all made with different patterns, everyday polka dot shopping bags, which are convenient for groceries and add a touch of glam to your look and also I sell load-shedding kits, which includes a candle and a box of matches which comes in a handmade carry/storage pack,” Barbara said.
An interesting stall was that of Noma Booi, a crafter based in Discovery, who said that her African products have a unique and modern twist as the designs are embroidered with colorful beads and made from different textures.

These are blankets, necklaces, takkies, scarves, and headwraps which Noma described as proudly South African attire.
