Programme for orphans hosts food giveaway project

Tshepang Programme for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children host food distribution in Princess.

The Tshepang Programme for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children hosted a food giveaway project in collaboration with Simunye Projects in Princess on March 12.

The main objective of this initiative was to give food parcels to community members who are sick so that they can have a basic meal before or after they take their medication or treatment. But, due to the settlement conditions, Tshepang, with advice from their partners, decided to give out parcels to everyone facing vulnerable conditions.

“The parcels contain clothes, food parcels, and e-Pap,” said Mathapelo Rammekwa from the programme.

The 18-year-old centre is running effectively with the assistance of 23 full-time caregivers and tends to child-headed households in the nearby informal settlement.

According to the co-founder of Simunye Projects, Samantha Dry, they started the project so that privileged children see how they can make a difference, and they partnered with Tshepang because they are doing great work, showing these children that they can make a difference too.

Tshepang has turned into a home for the homeless and underprivileged people of Princess and the surrounding areas. Its staff consists of people who previously resided in the area and understand the conditions that the community undergo daily.

“I’m very happy to be part of today’s initiative because going out to our very own community to show them love and support, all this made my day as this shows ubuntu and unity between us and the community,” said programme supervisor Kgomotso Mogale.

The programme cares for 320 children daily and has a feeding scheme for more than 105 adults and seniors. And more parcel handouts are expected throughout the year in the local informal settlements.
