A lifetime of love still going strong
A couple from Discovery have been happily married for 65 years, and they say that respect, despite your differences, is what keeps a marriage happy.
Seun and Rita Broodryk have been married longer than many people have been alive.
On March 25, they celebrated 65 years as a married couple.
Seun, originally from Klerksdorp, came to Johannesburg in 1957 and one day attended his cousin’s party, not knowing that he would meet the love of his life.
“We were both teenagers when we met, and it was love at first sight. I was immediately mesmerised by Rita’s charm and beauty,” Seun said.
“To make sure I get her, I got close to her dad, who was a mechanic, and I would often help him fix cars. I must admit she gave me a hard time.
“When we started going on dates, I introduced her to my late grandmother, and she immediately said, ‘That is your wife’,” Seun added.

After six years of blossoming romance, the couple exchanged vows in 1961 at the tender ages of 18 and 22. They have three children, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
“It still feels like yesterday, and I can still remember the wedding,” Rita said.
Even though many years have passed, they are still very much in love with each other. Seun still takes Rita to her hair appointment, and they still enjoy spending time together.
The 65 years of love, understanding and acceptance have been built on a commitment to maintaining their Christian values and honouring their vows to always be there for each other, through thick and thin.
Described as ‘fantastic parents’ who always prioritised time spent with family, those characteristics and morals still permeate their children’s lives today.
“We communicate, make sure we don’t go to bed angry at each other, and have God on our side,” added Rita.
Their advice to other couples is to always try to work everything out.
