Learners shine in public speaking competition

Despite some nerves, these learners left a lasting impression.

The Crawford International Grade Nine Open Team kicked off their journey in the Speech and Drama College Public Speaking Competition on Wednesday, 19 February, at Charter College.

Tackling the theme A Moment in Time, Gabriella Rutledge, Megan Botros, Deborah Oladokun and Mihle Mhlongo delivered powerful speeches on the women of the suffrage movement, captivating an audience of 35 people.

According to the school’s media director, Lindsay van Boven, despite some nerves, the learners’ passion and preparation shone through, and the adjudicator praised them, leaving them with the words, ‘a team of competent and capable speakers’.

“However, the nerves did creep through – you persevered, which is quite admirable. They say to strike a woman is to strike a rock; let this be the rock that allows you to build your foundations as amazing speakers!”

On Thursday, February 20, the Grade 11 Open Team took the spotlight, hosting teams from Hoërskool Roodepoort, Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge and The King’s School West Rand at the school’s Little Theatre. Looking ahead, the Grade 11 Trophy Team competition will take place on February 27 at St Ursula’s School in Krugersdorp.

On March 4, the Grade Eight Open Team will compete at Krugersdorp High School, and the Grade 11 Individual Speaker (prepared and unprepared) competition will take place at Charter College on March 10.

“We are incredibly proud of our speakers and look forward to more outstanding performances,” Lindsay expressed.
