Eric Shikobela writes open letter to the President

Eric Shikobela writes:

Dear Mr President

It is with a heavy heart and a broken spirit that I write this letter regarding the situation and the direction we are taking as a nation. We cannot continue to live as if everything is normal while our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and daughters are afraid to step out of their homes due to the risks and dangers they encounter on the streets of South Africa, just because they are women.

Mr President, imagine living your life every single day being scared that you might be the next victim. You might not relate with that Sir, you are a man who is surrounded by bodyguards. Your family is well protected too, so this might not really hit home with you but just try to imagine. We are sick and tired of receiving bad news about criminals’ evil acts on women, but nothing about the government’s plan to protect them.

You can’t speak sense into a senseless and barbaric man. The hand of the law must be harsh on perpetrators, and their rights must be limited. Why must someone who raped and killed another’s daughter still have rights equal to the victim’s? I have to say that democracy without consequences for one’s actions is as good as lawlessness. Sir, it’s high time we start a dialogue on reinstating the death penalty. This will ensure that deliberately taking [some]one’s life is as good as taking your own.

Why not utilise our nation’s security intelligence unit to trace buildings used for human trafficking and as drug dens? Mr President, we would really appreciate the very same military convoy that came out to ensure the lockdown regulations are observed, to be deployed to these crime hot spot buildings. Please, do take the full might of the law to such places.

Leadership is not a career, but a calling that comes with great responsibilities. I humbly request that you use your calling to lead the jewels of our nation to healing, restoration, justice, empowerment and protection, as such are principles of leadership.

Mr President I thank you in advance.
