Not many words or phrases have the power to scare me, but when it comes to the end of November, there are two words that absolutely terrify me – Black Friday!
For many people this is a day they have been looking forward to for almost a year. Many of them have also been planning their shopping spree meticulously, as they gleefully mark down the days on their calendar. And, in some instances, some may even have thrown in a maniacal chuckle or two, as they think about their diabolical plans to ensure they get the best deals/ bargains of this day.
But, this year, Black Friday will be looking quite different, as we are in the grip of the global Covid-19 pandemic, which means shoppers will have to adjust their plans accordingly, and, add a few other precautions to their shopping trip too.
So, for those of you who will not be making use of all the different online channels for your Black Friday deals, as I most certainly will be doing, sipping my coffee, here are a few important tips that might help you not only survive the madness, but also get that great deal/ bargain:
• First of all, ensure you are dressed for the occasion. Wear your combat fatigues, boots and war paint. You will need to ensure that your sprint game is strong. Emergency supplies like water and energy bars might also come in handy. You should also not forget to wear your favourite mask, keep some extra hand sanitizer close by (no, not to spray the other shoppers!) and ensure you keep your distance.
• Make sure you don’t brave this madness alone. Take along a buddy as this will ensure that one of you can stay at the trolley, while the other one grabs that coveted waffle pan. (Also, this will ensure that other shoppers will not be able to steal the items for which you have already done battle.)
• One of the most important safety tips is never to argue or fight over an item. No special is worth losing an eye, finger or part of your ear. Or, even more important, get infected with the virus.
• Lastly, be courteous to you fellow Black Friday shoppers. Do not take items from their trolleys and if you see someone reaching for the same item as you are, be kind, and, after getting yours, step aside, so your fellow warrior can get theirs too.
May all of you who are preparing for the Black Friday battle have a safe, fruitful and fun-filled outing, and come back as Black Friday survivors, ready to share your stories of horror – or success – with your children and their children.
Until next week, stay safe and look out for each other …
