Rugby fever running high as the World Cup draws closer

With the Rugby World Cup a mere four weeks away, my excitement can barely be contained.

Yes, it is official, I have been diagnosed with a fever that will probably last for the next two months or so, and the intensity of that will be highly influenced whenever the word ‘rugby’ is used.

You guessed it – I, like most of my fellow South Africans – am suffering from Rugby World Cup fever. And, as most of you know, there is absolutely no medicine for this, but the good news is, it will definitely be cured after October 28, when the new world champions are crowned.

I am sure that many of our loyal readers have, by now, realised that I am a huge fan of sports, especially when it comes to rugby and cricket (words like fanatic and crazy have been used to describe me before!). So, needless to say, my excitement is continuing to mount as the first game is set to kick off on September 8.

It might sound clichéd, but I really believe that rugby unites us all, and I will probably never forget that moment when Francois Pienaar lifted the trophy after the 1995 final against the All Blacks, saying, “We didn’t have the support of 63 000 South Africans today, we had the support of 42 million South Africans.” I was so proud to know that I was one of those supporters.

I have always been a very staunch and loyal Springbok supporter, no matter what, and have been known to claim that when cut, I bleed green and gold. This World Cup will be no different as I am standing squarely behind my team, backing them to make me proud.

In an attempt to embrace the motto #StrongerTogether, Caxton Local Media has launched a campaign for our local schools to show their support for the Springboks with our #Caxton4Bokke TikTok challenge.

Jeppe High School for Boys and Caxton Local Media invite SA schools to join them in showing their support of the Springboks in the lead-up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The Joburg school demonstrated its support of our men in green and gold by sharing a specially performed RWC war cry on TikTok. Jeppe High School for Boys now challenges other schools to follow suit. #StrongerTogether #FortiNihilDifficilius #Bokke #Springboks #RWC2023 @hsbastion @hs_monument @hs_noordheuwel @riebeeckrand_10_uit_10 @jannasforever @monumentprimary @almamaterprimary @laerskoolflorida @laerskoolrapportryer1

How does it work?

Perform a special war cry to show support for the Springboks, record it, and publish it on TikTok and other social media platforms. Remember to include #StrongerTogether, #Caxton4Bokke, and your school’s hashtags, as well as issuing a challenge to the other local schools to respond and participate in this challenge.

If your school does not have a TikTok account, send your video to roodepoortrecord@caxton.co.za/ northside@caxton.co.za and we will ensure it is published on our TikTok account.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
