Maphanga wins first river race of new season
No fallen tree or challenging rapid could hold the club's star back.
It was like taking candy from a baby for Florida Lake Canoe Club’s (FLCC) top paddler and regular achiever Shaun Maphanga who won the first river race of the new canoeing season.
Maphanga was the first to cross the finish line and cover the 18km river race with more than a minute to spare. The 18km stretched from Meyerton Sportsgrounds to Three Rivers.
Besides his high work rate and outstanding form that seems to never die, Maphanga is also a coach and the clubhouse manager.
A couple of new learner paddlers also had the opportunity to test their newly acquired paddling skills on their first race of the new season.
“The distance is designed to exclude the more technically difficult rapids, to ensure that new river paddlers would manage,” FLCC spokesperson Jennie Dallas says.
