The South African Men’s Hockey Team were on the end of a 7-1 mauling in a Group B World Cup clash against the Netherlands in The Hague on Sunday.

South Africa had to endure wave after wave of Orange attack on their goal as the three time winners remained unbeaten on home soil.

Seve van Ass, Valentin Verga and Jeroen Hertzberger handed the Dutch a three goal lead before the half hour mark.

The assault continued as Robbert Kemperman scored either side of the break, before Billy Bakker made it 6-0 after 41 minutes.

‘The Lads’ pulled one back through Justin Reid-Ross who soon after saw two penalty corner attempts superbly saved as the South Africans looked to end the game on a high.

It was the Dutch though who had the last say, Sander Baart rounding off a superb display by the Netherlands, 7-1.

The South African men are bottom of Group B, with a minus 15 goal deficit having lost 4-0 to Germany, 5-0 to New Zealand, and playing to a goalless draw against Korea before losing heavily to the Dutch.
