PSL suspend league for COSAFA

League to be suspended for two weeks during COSAFA Cup.

The Premier League Soccer (PSL) have taken Bafana Bafana’s international fixtures into account and have opted to suspend the league for two weeks during the 2014 Cosafa Cup.

The tournament will be staged in Botswana from 13 to 28 September.

The only thing that will not be changed is the domestic MTN8 final that will take place on September 20, but aside from players from the two teams involved in that clash, the new Bafana coach will be able to select players from the rest of the PSL for the event.

Due to the tournament falling outside of the assigned FIFA calendar dates, clubs are not obliged to release their players and could deny the national team access to their players if they want.

The Cosafa Cup falls between the second and third rounds of qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, providing a good window of opportunity for the Bafana players to get acquainted with the new coach.

South Africa will have a new coach in their hierarchy after SAFA confirmed earlier this month that they will not be renewing Gordon Igesund’s contract which will expire in July 2014.
