Petersen: ‘I prefer batting at four’

South African top order batsman says he is comfortable at four.

South African top order batsman Alviro Petersen who currently tops the batting averages in the English county series, has revealed that batting at No 4 has contributed to his superb performances for Somerset.

The 33-year-old who is set to open the batting for the Proteas in their tour of Sri Lanka has scored 517 runs in eight first-class matches for Somerset and averaged 51.7.

Talking about his performances with SuperSport.com, Petersen said: “I actually prefer batting at four rather than open the batting. If I can start my career all over, I would bat at No 4. Opening the batting is by far the hardest batting position.

“Early season in England is always tough for batsmen, but I developed a trigger which I started to use in 2012, and that is to combat late swing.

“It also helped me to get into good positions early. The downside of a trigger is that it’s not always consistent,” he added.
