Mayweather pips Pacquiao on points to retain unbeaten record
Floyd Mayweather managed to hold off Manny Pacquaio in their much-anticipated encounter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and now stands unbeaten in 48 fights.
Following years of hype, Floyd Mayweather Jnr. took on Manny Pacquaio in a fight for the WBC, WBA and WBO welterweight titles at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The fight started off slowly, with Mayweather having the upper hand in the first two rounds, but Pacquiao responded well in the third and fourth rounds.
Despite Mayweather looking visibly nervous prior to the fight, the encounter was fairly even until the latter rounds, during which he began to gain the ascendancy over Pacquaio.
Pacquiao was unable to release his trademark volume punching, with Mayweather largely dictating the tempo of the fight. The judges had the fight in Mayweather’s favour by 118-110 and 116-112 points apiece.
Mayweather still has one more fight left on his contract with Showtime Sports, and has yet to decide on an opponent for his final showdown in September. When asked about his future plans, Pacquaio replied “I’ll take a vacation, and God will take care of the rest.” The Filipino’s record now stands at 57-6-2.
In terms of earnings, Mayweather is expected to earn upwards of $180m dollars, while Pacquaio is expected to take home approximated $100m dollars, depending on pay-per-view figures.
