Archers aim to be the best in the West

Preparations for Nationals underway

Two archers from the Inyala Archery Club in Witpoortjie are aiming to be the best archers on the West Rand.

The 13-year-old Elné Rossouw took up archery about five months ago, and, according to her coach, Magda Wilhelm, she has been showing great potential. “Elné has competed in three competitions so far, and has achieved an overall second place at the Elspark competition, which was held recently,” Magda said.

She added that Elné is breathing down the neck of the 14-year-old Magdel Wilhelm, who is the club’s top archer at the moment. “Currently, Elné is Magdel’s biggest competition,” said Magda.

Both archers are preparing for the upcoming National Championships which will be happening in October this year, and Magda said, “In addition to this, Magdel is also working hard for a chance to be chosen for the Gauteng team this year, as she has been part of this team for the past four years now. If Elné keeps on working this hard, she also stands a chance to be chosen for the junior Gauteng team this year.”

The club forms part of the National Archery in the Schools Programme (Nasp), which has been active in South Africa for the past 10 years. Magda said,

“Since archery has been introduced in South Africa, it has been the second-fastest growing sport in the country.”

In addition to the youngsters, Magda and her husband, Willem, have also been shooting competitively for the past year, and were both chosen for the Gauteng team. “We are looking for adult archers to join our team, and shoot with us. Not only will they have a lot of fun, but they will also have an opportunity to be awarded with Provincial colours,” she said.
