Join ‘The Grind’ to grow the Roodepoort skateboard scene
From Sunday 4 October, The Grind will be hosting a skate park at Florida Square from 2pm to 7pm every second Sunday.
Other than stripped bearings, broken trucks and snapped boards, the biggest obstacle standing in front of the rebellious skater is ‘The Man’. Characterised by security guards, concerned parents and bad vibes, The Man is there to bring them down.
Gone are the days when Johannesburg offered a variety of premier skate parks, leaving the skateboard fraternity using guerilla tactics to turn streets and sidewalks into their grind rails and gaps. The cityscape has always been prime skating territory, but Sasha Wright of ‘The Grind’ is hoping to create a safe area for children to enjoy their chosen pastime.

From Sunday 4 October, The Grind will be hosting a skate park at Florida Square from 2pm to 7pm every second Sunday. The aim of the event will be to raise funds for the group to move to a permanent venue. The group has their sights set on a nearby park that already has an old halfpipe, meaning it is ripe for rejuvenation. Until then, R25 entry for over 13s and R15 for younger kids will help the group bring skating back to Florida.
Shops at Florida Square, on Plaza Road, will still be open but a section of the parking lot will be sectioned off for the skaters. “They need a safe place to skate. They have been skating in the street and it is becoming dangerous for them and the cars,” said Sasha, mother of two avid board riders. “I love skating, I love skateboard culture and I love the lifestyle. It’s a great form of expression and kids need the right environment to be able to do so,” she continued.

For now, the makeshift park has a limited variety of poles and ramps so they are appealing to lovers of the scene to contribute to adding to the collection. Those who traded baggy jeans for the corporate suit are also encouraged to make their way to Florida Square to rekindle their skills, or pass down an old board or two. A group of older kids will be on hand to assist the younger generation with the aim of creating a fun, family-friendly afternoon.
