Florida Park Tennis Club brings back the glory days

Club on a mission to recruit the best young talent from across Florida

Those who say that tennis is just a casual leisure sport have not experienced the sharp end of the competitive club circuit.

A resurgence is under way at Florida Park Tennis Club, with both men’s and women’s teams finishing their doubles league in fine fashion. The Egoli League is a Gauteng Central Tennis Association (GCTA) doubles league that pits doubles pairings, three for men and two for women, from six different clubs against each other in a round-robin format. The league began on the first weekend in February with the final fixtures being played on 6 and 7 March.

Florida Park’s women’s team, the first to be entered in several years, had an excellent set of results. A rotated blend of youth and experience gelled well, with the team winning four of their five fixtures to claim second spot in their section. “We are very proud of them and we are very encouraged to know some of them are so young. It is great to be able to get good, young ladies in the side,” said club administrator, Louise Kruger.

Champagne was on the menu as the men’s team were crowned winners of their section when they completed their fifth straight win of the season against their visitors, Pirates Tennis Club. Made up of a few new recruits, the team cleaned up division two’s section two and will now move up to section one next season. The growth of the club is evident by the on-court success, and they are making room for more members and more trophies.
