Rugby award winner donates winnings to local NPO
The Ikholwa Projects support a children’s home in Weltevreden Park that cares for children aged six weeks to 18 years and understandably, the economic woes of the country have plunged the home in greater need.
Morné van den Berg, the winner in the Best off the Bench category in the BrightRock Players Choice Awards 2020 felt the need to be generous and donated his winnings to Ikholwa, an NPO in Weltevreden Park.

The Weltevreden Park resident and Golden Lions Rugby Union senior team player revealed to the Northsider what has been the most challenging aspect of the Covid-19 pandemic for him as a professional athlete.
“The most difficult part for me was not seeing my family and friends; sometimes we had to make those sacrifices in order to keep fit and be healthy to stay on top of our game,” said Morné.
Morné is a former Hoërskool Linden learner and is currently pursuing his studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).
After finishing high school he played for the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for a season before he got invited to train with the Golden Lions Rugby Union U/19 squad in preparation for the U/19 Currie Cup.
“When I started playing for the Golden Lions, I worked myself up from team to team. After playing Varsity Cup rugby for Wits and through hard work, I am now in the Lions senior team set-up.
