Roodepoort West’s title race takes another knock

The two sides wasted no time to provide the expected fireworks with attacks initiated from the one end of the pitch to the other.

The Friday Masters League got under way on 16 April with an encounter between Roodepoort West and the Soweto-based Hlomangani at the South West Gauteng FET College, Roodepoort West Campus.

The two sides wasted no time to provide the expected fireworks with attacks initiated from the one end of the pitch to the other.

The visitors could not keep up with the high-pressure play from the Roodepoort West central midfielders as they started to dominate and provided quality supply for their marksman, Mandla Sibanda.

The first goal came from the home side; however, the slim lead was short-lived as Hlomangani fought back and scored the equaliser.

Both teams scored again and went into the second stanza tied at two goals apiece, giving them the chance to reorganise their charges and introduce fresh legs.

It was déjà vu early in the second half as the hosts scored an early goal from a defence-splitting pass from Khathutshelo Munyama who later found the back of the net in fine fashion.

However, the match ended disappointingly for the Roodepoort team as they suffered a 4–3 loss that saw their chances of moving up the log halted by a determined and more disciplined Hlomangani side.

Roodepoort West are currently placed on number nine on the log, with the unbeaten Soweto East team sitting on top of the log followed by Legends.
