Discovery Bowling Club hosts Sables Singles Open

Leases and Rustenburg Bowling Clubs had a good weekend of results

Without the safety net of a partner, one is left in a lone fight between you and the wood.

There was a test of individual temperament at Discovery Bowling Club as they hosted a Singles Open on September 25 and 26. The two-day tournament pitted the best men and women from the Sables District in a round-robin fight for the number-one spot. Featuring several lawn bowlers to have worn the Protea jacket, the level of competition was as fierce as it was sophisticated.

After an energy-sapping Saturday, a swapping of greens was in order for the Sunday deciders. Bridget Calitz was the overnight leader and the current Proteas star from Leases Bowling Club held her nerve to walk away the women’s champion. Marissa Meyer from Rustenburg Bowling Club made a late surge for second place while home heroine, Thabelo Muvhango, beat out more fancied and experienced competition to the bronze medal.

The men’s section was won by Robbie Piketh from Krugersdorp Bowling Club, followed by runner-up Craig Nicol from Leases Bowling Club. Andre Meyer from Rustenburg Bowling Club wrapped up the top three, completing a strong set of results for the men and women from the old mining strongholds.
