West Rand Wrestling Gymnasium adding more medals to the massive collection

Juan Nel and the boys bagged seven medals at national Greco-Roman Championships.

The young fighters at West Rand Wrestling Gymnasium have been at their consistent best so far this year.

At the three competitions they have graced in 2023 they currently have a total of 23 medals in the bag. On April 22, the team was in Alberton for the Highveld Hawks tournament and earned eight gold medals and two bronze there.

That tournament was followed by the South African Greco-Roman and Masters Championships held on April 29 and 30 in Pretoria. From the seven wrestlers who participated, they returned home with five gold medals, one silver and a bronze. Rhenzo Retief earned third place while Robert Hurn, Reinhardt Roos, and brothers Ruan and Juanro earned gold. Competing in two categories, coach Juan Nel came second in the open section and won gold in the masters.

Three weeks later they were on the mat again competing at the Free State Open. Janu Botha came home with a bronze medal while Logan Barnard, Eben van Boordt, and JJ Potgieter did so with silver. The Roos brothers, Reghardt and Reinhardt were the standout performers winning gold for their club. Coach Juan and his young warriors will aim to keep the momentum as they build toward the freestyle national championships in October.
