Honeydew’s own two-time African champion

An 18-year-old kickboxer and dancer hopes to reach his goal of becoming a future mixed martial artist.

Thando Mahlangu (18) is ready to take on the world. He started his kickboxing career in 2021 after Covid hit.

“I used to watch a lot of mixed martial arts on TV and was drawn to the sport,” he explained, stating that he told his uncle about his interest.

He explained that Thando should first start with kickboxing and then go on to mixed martial arts.

“I knew I wanted to be in the ring, fighting, from the get-go,” he added.

Thando has participated in 13 fights since then and has won nine and lost four.

“I am also proud to say that I am a two-time African Kickboxing Champion in the under 60kg low kicks division,” he exclaimed. Thando was selected to represent South Africa in England for the World Championships but unfortunately, his financial situation would not allow it.

“My on-stage nickname, Biggie, originated from one of my coaches – he looked at my hands and thought they were big. That’s how Biggie started. Personally, I prefer the nickname Thido, as my uncle calls me,” Thando elaborated.

His goal for the next couple of years would be to compete for more titles and belts.

“I also enjoy dancing, which I guess comes from my mother’s side of the family. I love contemporary and hip hop dancing,” he added by saying his mom is his coach and a dancer herself.

“I would love to compete as a dancer as well.”
