Local wrestlers ready to rumble

Three local wrestlers are selected to represent South Africa at major wrestling event.

Being in a country that is determined to be number one in sports is becoming the talk of the town, as the current reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis would say, “hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie!”

Following Dricus and the Springboks’ World Cup success, South African sports are climbing up the world ranking ladder. Six national wrestlers who are part of the World Wrestling Association of South Africa (WAWSA) have been selected to represent the country at one of the most notorious wrestling events on the African continent – Wrestlemonster 6.

Among those wrestlers are three local champions – Donovan Blignaut (LoudMouth), George Wilhelm (Xterminator), and Freddy Harmse (Mr Wrestling). Wrestlemonster is one of the most prominent wrestling tournaments in the African continent hosted annually.

For the first time, the best of South African pro wrestling takes on the best of the United Kingdom at an African premier showpiece at the Splash Festival at the Nelson Mandela Bay on March 29 in Gqeberha. Wrestlemonster 6 will debut as one of the most outstanding forms of pro wrestling because it is specially designed to showcase the best of the best.

The caliber of wrestlers, expected to be pro wrestlers, have competed in competitions in the USA as well as European championships. On top of that, after the Wrestlemonster 6 tournament, WAWSA will be embarking on a tour with Gentle Giant promotions and all the Sun Fest Body Building competitors.

“We are taking this very seriously and we must be strict and consistent with our meal plan, training sessions, and going to the wrestling arena three times a week,” Donovan mentioned.

They are currently doing their social media marketing, and the announcement of those participating in the festival will be made on February 1. The event is set to be streamed and watched by the majority of South Africa as it currently has a presence on DStv, channel 261 every Wednesday from 21:00, with the repeat on Saturdays between 17:00 and 18:00.

As the famous ring announcer Michael Buffer would say, “Let’s get ready to rumble!”
