Panorama take on the Comrades

Eight runners participate in the annual and much-anticipated Comrades Marathon, challenging their skills and agility.

Long-distance runners who geared up for the Comrades Marathon on June 9, starting in Durban and finishing off in Pietermaritzburg, ended the day with tired bodies, new milestones, and memories to cherish.

For the Panorama Running Club, this iconic event became not just a test of physical endurance but a moment to remember, as this year the club proudly sent eight of its members to partake in the legendary race, with the added excitement of welcoming two new runners to their ranks.

According to the chairperson of the Panorama Running Club, Gangatha Mkele, the turnout of volunteers who were so eager to participate was very inspiring, not only for the club but also for their fellow runners who compete in weekly events.

“Among the eight runners, the inclusion of two new faces injected a fresh sense of excitement and anticipation. We are so proud of our runners and hope to see more volunteers in the next Comrades Marathon,” Mkele said.

Zethu Kaka, a novice runner who completed the Comrades in 11:50:39, shared her first Comrades experience with the Roodepoort Northsider.

“Comrades has always been on my bucket list, so when I joined Panorama Running Club mid-year, I decided that when the entries opened, I would go for the opportunity.

“I started training around November 2023 and my plan was just to get through the finish line before the cutoff time. My first big race was the Two Oceans Marathon, which I believed was a mammoth task but I conquered, which meant all roads led to Comrades.

“The Comrades was truly a humbling experience, from the moment you signed up leading up to the big event. I think it’s safe to say that this was a life-changing experience that no one can ever take away from you,” she said.

Simon Segau, a dedicated Comrades Marathon runner who has completed 12 Comrades, of which 10 were silver medal finishers, completed his race in 07:34:28.

“Running is in my blood and each year when I participate in the Comrades, I tell myself that the new year comes with new goals to achieve,” Simon said.

As the sun set on another unforgettable edition of the Comrades Marathon, the members of the Panorama Running Club crossed the finish line with heads held high and their hearts brimming with pride and accomplishment.
