Entries for Northgate race now open
Roodepoort Athletics Club is set to host its 27th Northgate Road Race on July 20.
The Roodepoort Athletics Club is gearing up to host its 27th annual Northgate Road Race, a beloved event that has become a staple in the community.
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better, with entries now officially open.
According to Conrad de Buys, the club’s chairperson, the event has grown significantly over the years, from 100 entries 20 years ago to an impressive 1 200 participants in 2024.
He says it has been a long-standing tradition within the club, with Northgate Shopping Centre being the chosen venue because the club was once the only central club in the West Rand, making it an ideal location that drew participants from as far as Pretoria and the East Rand, as well as local areas.
“Northgate has always been our official sponsor of the race,” says Conrad, “The race aims to raise fitness awareness in the community, and it has become a family-friendly event that attracts participants of all ages.”
This year’s event will take place on July 20, and participants can choose from two distances: 5km (R60 entry fee) and 10km (R70). The race for all the distances will start at 07:30.
According to Conrad, safety is a top priority, with the JMPD, ambulance services, security, and safety officers all on board to ensure a smooth and safe experience for participants.
“About 45 members of the Roodies team will be facilitating the race, and three water points will be strategically placed at the starting point, 2.5km, and the finish point.
“For the past 20 years, the race had a manual timing system, and now we have introduced an electronic timing device hosted by Peak Timing. Race results will be sent via SMS to the participants.”
