Athletes shine at Crawford Derby
The learners competed against each other in various sports like netball, soccer, rugby sevens, hockey, tennis, chess, and basketball.
The school grounds at Crawford International Ruimsig came alive on Saturday, August 2, as the school hosted a derby. Learners from Curro Wilgeheuwel, Nova Pioneer Ruimsig, Hoërskool Roodepoort, Hoërskool Florida, West Ridge High School, Alma Mater International School, and Newton House School also took part.
The learners competed against each other in various sports like netball, soccer, rugby sevens, hockey, tennis, chess, and basketball. Families and friends came together in the chilly morning to support those who were participating on the day.

The newly completed rugby field provided the perfect stage for a fast-paced day filled with high-energy action. The Crawford rugby team dominated the matches and won seven out of eight matches, with the final one being a draw. Mukoni Madumo and Thando Twala each received the Man of the Match titles as they gave their best on the field.
On the soccer field, the matches were fierce as players battled each other to score goals. After drawing against Curro Wilgeheuwel and claiming a solid win over Nova Pioneer, the day’s highlight came in the form of a dramatic match between Curro and Roodepoort, ending in a penalty shootout that had spectators holding their breath.

Curro Wilgeheuwel, Hoërskool Roodepoort, Nova Pioneer, and Crawford faced each other with tough competition on the netball field. The players showed strong defence, and each match reflected the players’ determination and development.
Tennis players competed against Hoërskool Florida, showing focus, technical skill, and mental toughness across all matches. Every rally was a testament to the hard work put in by the athletes and their coaches.

The Crawford hockey team won 4–0 against Hoërskool Roodepoort. In the basketball court, the players’ energy and precision on the court were visible as Nova played against Crawford, and each player from each team showed dedication to their team through strong defence and willingness to win.
Chess saw both Crawford A and B teams secure victories against Nova Pioneer and Hoërskool Roodepoort. Despite an early challenge playing outdoors, the players quickly adapted and maintained composure throughout, delivering a clean sweep in every match.
The music played on the speakers helped to keep everyone energised, with people singing along to some of their favourite songs. The food stalls also offered a variety of snacks and drinks for attendees to nibble on in between the matches.
