Local racer shines at Formula Vee champs

Diane Stewarts claims notable victory at highly competitive motorsport competition.

Daine Stewart’s need for speed is well-known … and for good reason. The 26-year-old has been revving up the engines in the Formula Vee South Africa Championship.

On August 22 and 23, he competed in Round 6 of the championship at the East London Grand Prix Circuit, where he showcased his driving skills and determination.

Despite a challenging start to race one, where he had to take action to avoid a collision, Stewart recovered well to finish in fourth place. In race two, he was part of a closely contested battle, fighting hard to bring his car home in fifth place while securing the fastest lap of the race heat. He again started strongly in race three, moving to the front pack and finishing in fifth place after an intense wheel-to-wheel contest.

Overall, Stewart finished in fourth place for the weekend and first place in the association classification.

“What made me stand out was consistency, determination, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Formula Vee is a highly competitive category in South African motorsport, and racing at the historic East London circuit made this round particularly memorable,” he said.

Stewart’s passion for motorsport began at the age of 11, when he started racing in Formula M (an entry-level South African karting category with multiple classes based on engine size and tire type). He progressed to go-karting and eventually made his way into Formula Vee (a national circuit racing formula for single-seater, Volkswagen-powered cars).

“I’ve always been fascinated by cars and the challenge of pushing both myself and the machine to the limit,” he said.

When asked for words of encouragement to others looking up to him, Stewart said, “Never stop chasing your passion, no matter how big the dream may seem. Start where you can, work hard, and always focus on learning and improving. Motorsport can be tough and challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.”
