Witpoortjie gymnasts represent SA at African champs

The Roux brothers brought home silver and gold medals after representing South Africa.

Two gymnasts from the 24Seven Gymnastics and Trampoline Club were selected to represent South Africa at the African Championships.

Brothers JC and JP Roux were among the four South African gymnasts who competed at the championships, held at Heartfelt Arena in Tshwane early in May.

JC delivered an outstanding performance, earning a silver medal in the individual trampoline category, making him the second-best gymnast in the country.

He also secured another silver medal in the synchro trampoline event alongside his brother JP. Together, they helped the senior South African men’s team claim overall gold.

Speaking to the Roodepoort Record, JC described the achievement as the highlight of his 12-year gymnastics career.

“This is the competition I am most proud of. I feel like I have accomplished many of my goals, but my biggest goal going forward is to qualify for the Olympics in 2028,” he said.

Apart from competing, JC has also spent the past four years coaching and judging trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic gymnastics.

Several of his students have gone on to achieve national and international colours.

“It is very humbling to coach and teach young athletes’ life skills through gymnastics,” he added.

For JP, the road to the championships was far from smooth. Just 10 days before the competition, he accidentally cut his foot and hand with a grinder.

“We were all worried about him, but we were thankful he did not cut any bones,” said his mother, Luitha Roux, who is also the head of the club.

Due to the injuries, JP was unable to train properly, and his stitches only came out two days before the competition. Despite the setback, he made a remarkable recovery and went on to win two medals at the championships.
