New volleyball team celebrates first trophy win

These players went from beginners to confident players ready for big competitions.

The King’s School West Rand’s U17 Boys Volleyball team made their school proud after winning the TUKS 2025 Volleyball Tournament on September 20.

The event took place at the University of Pretoria, and the team, according to their coach Shouneez Binning, won in style, finishing unbeaten.

The boys played six matches. In the final, they claimed a 2–0 victory, proving that hard work and dedication pay off.

Binning said volleyball is still a fairly new sport at the school.

“It started as a social activity just to get kids onto the sports field, but over the last year it has grown,” he explained. “We played friendlies in term three to prepare for the TUKS tournament. Rudolf du Plessis, head coach of the TUKS volleyball squad, even ran a Saturday clinic with our teams to help us build structure and focus on the basics, like serving, which is key to winning points.”

The boys also gained experience from playing club volleyball. Four players joined the Spiker-Roo Volleyball Club this year, bringing what they learnt back to the school team.

“They are very passionate about the game,” Binning said. “They practise after hours, and it showed in how well they played at the tournament. They did better than all of us expected.”

Looking ahead, the school plans to join the Goliath Cup League and SACSSA Tournament in 2026 and introduce volleyball to the primary school in term four.

“We’re looking forward to a very exciting year ahead,” Binning concluded.
