Florida Albion Football Club and Prestige Football Development Academy clashed in a thrilling derby on Saturday, October 4, drawing a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators and parents.
Despite the chilly weather, both teams were primed for action, knowing every point was crucial in the tightly contested Gauteng Development Promotion League, where the top spot hangs precariously in the balance.
Happening at Albion’s home grounds in Trezona Park, the day’s action kicked off at 09:00 with the U14 teams in action, where Prestige scored the only goal, securing a 0 –1 win.
The U15s followed at 10:30, delivering an intense and closely contested match that ended 1–1. The U17s took to the field at 12:00, playing out a 1–1 draw, while the U19s wrapped up the day’s fixtures at 14:00 with a goalless 0–0 stalemate.
Sphamandla Mthethwa, Prestige Academy coach, acknowledged that it was a very tough game, as both teams were fighting for the first position.
“We are pleased with the performance and results. It was closely contested; you can tell by the score margin. Top performance for both sides.
“We knew that it was not going to be easy, as we were playing away, but our boys showed character and willingness,” he said.
Coach Siyabonga Mpange from Albion U14 said he was happy with the performance of the team across all divisions.
“Even though we didn’t get the results we wanted, the boys played well and showed character, dedication and passion,” he said.
Prestige walked away with five points, and Albion bagged three points, putting Prestige at the top of the league.
