Canoe club invites community to free canoeing lessons

The lessons will take place every Sunday in October and November at Florida Lake, booking beforehand is essential.

Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) is inviting interested community members to its upcoming series of free canoeing lessons open to anyone eager to learn a new water sport and enjoy the natural beauty of Florida Lake.

The lessons will be held throughout October and November every Sunday from 14:00 at the lake. This fantastic opportunity will offer beginners a chance to develop their skills in a safe and welcoming environment.

FLCC media liaison Jennie Dallas said, “We want to make sure everyone interested can learn, but participants must be able to swim in deep water. Non-swimmers are not allowed to participate because of safety concerns.

“Learners under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must sign an indemnity form confirming that the child can swim in deep water. We do put life jackets on everyone in case of bumps or heads,” she said.

She added that this initiative by the club is to give community members a skill, especially those who cannot afford it.

The beginner-friendly sessions will cover essential skills such as paddling techniques, balancing, and safety procedures. Participants will learn how to properly launch and land canoes, navigate calm waters, and handle unexpected situations.

Interested community members are encouraged to register early, as space is limited. To reserve a spot, participants must book a session directly with Jennie on 082 857 8571.

“We can’t have 50 people turn up on one day because we only have one coach and six boats,” she explained. “Scheduling in advance helps us ensure everyone gets proper attention and safety.”

Participants should bring comfortable clothing suitable for water activities, a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle. All canoeing equipment will be provided.
