Curro Wilgeheuwel mountain biker takes the lead
His performance is turning heads across Gauteng's toughest MTB races.
Rebaona Matshwane, commonly known as Reba, is gradually establishing himself as one of Gauteng’s most promising young mountain bikers.
Competing in the Sprog Boys category (ages 11–12), he represents Curro Wilgeheuwel School and the iThuba Development Club.
This year, he has participated in various mountain biking disciplines, including cross-country short track (XCC), cross-country Olympic (XCO), marathon (XCM), and Enduro, demonstrating remarkable skill, determination, and focus throughout the season.

Reba had an impressive season in the Gauteng Primary Schools MTB Series, winning two races at Riversands Farm Village and Hazeldean Valley Trails. He also secured second place at De Damhuis and Steyn City School. Although he finished seventh at Grootfontein Bike Park and 10th at the Interprovincial Final in Tzaneen, his consistent performance earned him Gauteng Provincial Colours.
In the XCC and XCO provincial series, he frequently placed in the top ten at challenging venues such as Riversands, St Stithians, Thaba Trails, and Grootfontein. At the Karkloof Youth Festival, part of the South African Youth MTB Championships, he excelled by winning the time trial and achieving strong finishes in XCC, Enduro, and XCM events. Additionally, he competed in the Trailseeker Series in Gauteng, finishing fourth at Die Bosveld and third at Van Gaalen. He also participated in the Ride Joburg road race at the FNB Stadium, where he finished third in his category on a mountain bike.

Reba’s hard work, positive attitude, and focus have been praised by his family, friends, and coaches. He remains determined and continues to improve, even after facing crashes and challenging races.
“Train regularly, rest properly, don’t stress too much, and just enjoy yourself,” Reba advises fellow riders in the MTB sport.
With multiple podium finishes, provincial recognition, and a growing reputation for resilience and skill, Reba’s cycling future looks promising. He has also become a role model for other riders, inspiring them to always strive for their best.
