Fitness fun peaks at 633rd parkrun

Runners and walkers of all ages enjoyed Roodepoort's 633rd parkrun edition.

An enthusiastic crowd of 429 participants flocked to Len Rutter Park this past Saturday, November 15, for the 633rd edition of Roodepoort parkrun, embracing the scenic route through the lush surroundings and showcasing remarkable athletic performances.

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities took part, from seasoned athletes to families and beginners. The sense of community was palpable, with strangers becoming friends and offering words of encouragement.

The men’s race was fiercely contested, with Daniel Bower crossing the finish line in a swift 20:29 to claim first place. Close on his heels, Nicholas da Silva set a new personal best with a time of 21:17, securing third position. Theophelas Bongani rounded out the top three, clocking in at 21:34 and demonstrating consistent performance.

On the women’s side, Maryna Bijker led the pack with a time of 24:45, demonstrating impressive endurance and speed. She was followed by Dieketseng Mangadi at 26:55 and Cici Mchunu with a solid 29:12, completing the top trio of female finishers.

On the honours board, Craig Rheeders celebrated his 350th parkrun milestone, a testament to his dedication and love for the sport. Sharing with the Roodepoort Record, Craig shared that he started running the parkrun in 2017 after his sister encouraged him to do it. He has toured 12 different parkruns.

“I have committed myself to be here every Saturday at 08:00. I’m very excited to have achieved this goal. Every milestone is worth it, and it’s always good to see people that you’ve met here becoming friends and family,” he said, beaming with pride.

Parkrun continues to be a beloved, free event that encourages community participation and healthy living. Participants only need to register and print their barcode on www.parkrun.co.za to become part of the global family, united by a shared passion for running and camaraderie.
