Florida Hills duo cap their dreams
David Holland and Rico Henning, neighbours with a shared vision, celebrate their Lions cricket colours.
Two young boys who live on the same street and share the same dream have achieved a significant milestone in their cricket journeys, both earning their Lions caps at a special ceremony at Wanderers Stadium on November 2.
David Holland and Rico Henning, both 12 years old, share a common dream: To represent Gauteng at the national level. Their stories of dedication, perseverance, and passion highlight the promising future of local cricket talent.
David, a learner at Trinityhouse Little Falls, has been passionate about cricket since he was four. He recently played for Johannesburg West in a four-day regional festival and was selected to represent Gauteng West in upcoming trials set to take place at the end of November.
Last year, he represented the Gauteng U11 team and placed 14th out of 200 players. Since the U8 age group, he has been a fixture in the Johannesburg West district and now plays for his school’s first cricket team.
Sharing with the Roodepoort Record, he expressed pride in receiving his Lions cap and shared his ambitions to score big runs, make his country proud, and one day compete in the IPL or BBL.
Rico from Laerskool Fairland has also been playing cricket from a very young age.
After missing out on the Gauteng Lions team at U11, Rico worked hard to improve and finally achieved his goal this year. He was also selected for the Central Gauteng North U12 team, and his ambition is to play 1st team cricket at Helpmekaar Kollege, then for the Lions senior team, and ultimately the Proteas, or become an umpire if cricket doesn’t work out.
Additionally, he and his cricket team have remained unbeaten from the U8 to U11 age groups, capturing league titles at every level, and he has also been selected for the Johannesburg Northwest regional squad from U9 through U11.
Both boys have shown dedication and resilience, sharing a moment of pride at Wanderers and looking forward to representing Gauteng in the upcoming provincial tournament. Their stories serve as an inspiration to young cricketers everywhere.
