Gymnast vaults her way to nationals

A few years into her gymnastics journey, Abigail has proven that she is determined to be a champion.

When most children were finding innovative ways to keep themselves entertained and busy during the Covid-19 pandemic, young Abigail Anderton (10) discovered something far more meaningful – a passion for gymnastics.

With no access to clubs or coaching at the time, Abigail began teaching herself the basics using YouTube videos, practising handstands, cartwheels, and strength drills in her family’s home. According to her mother, Lauren van der Linde, what initially seemed like a pastime quickly revealed itself as a remarkable natural talent.

“She was fearless,” recalls Lauren. “Even without equipment, she just wanted to learn more, try more, and understand how everything worked.”

Recognising her potential, her parents enrolled her at Visions Gymnastics once restrictions eased. It didn’t take long for trainers there to take notice. Coaches identified Abigail as an exceptional prospect, one whose raw talent was matched by an uncommon level of discipline.

Now five years into the sport, Abigail competes annually and continues to rise through the ranks with unwavering determination. Last year, her progress earned her an invitation to Cape Town to compete at the national level.

Recently, Abigail made a name for herself representing Gauteng at the National Gymnastics Championships. Abigail competed against the top young gymnasts from across South Africa. She delivered her strongest showing yet, placing third overall in the country.

“Abigail was such a star, and despite the pressure, she excelled fearlessly. Additionally, she placed second overall in the beam and vault, seventh in the bars, and ninth in her floor performance,” Lauren proudly says.

Her coaches describe her as hard-working, driven, and endlessly curious, always analysing her performances, asking questions, and striving for improvement. Her dedication has made her a role model to younger gymnasts at Visions Gymnastics, where her journey is often cited as proof that passion and perseverance can overcome even the most unexpected beginnings.
