Padel prodigy reaches new heights
What began as a hobby has now taken young Ryden to international excellence.
At just 11 years old, Ryden Forsynth is emerging as one of the youngest and most skilled padel players in the West Rand.
His journey began just over a year ago after he started playing the sport as a hobby when football season ended. Ryden instantly fell in love with padel, and this blossomed into him pursuing it professionally. Inspired by watching and following professional padel players around the world, Ryden realised he wanted more than social play.
“I started playing padel just for fun and quickly fell in love with the sport,” Ryden explained. “I like how fast the game is and how you have to think quickly. I also enjoy playing with different partners.”
Before padel, Ryden spent his sporting time on the football field. The transition between the two sports was seamless. This natural crossover has given him an early advantage in his speed, agility, and game awareness.
Ryden, being at his peak in padel, is set to compete in the Baldwin Junior Padel Tournament taking place at Waterfall City in Midrand from November 28, competing among other young and talented players. Additionally, he has been selected to participate in the FIP Promises International Tournament, where you earn global ranking points.
“The feeling is surreal!” Ryden said excitedly. “I never thought that a sport I once saw as a hobby would open doors for me.”
With padel gaining rapid popularity in South Africa, Ryden hopes to play a meaningful role in its future. Ultimately, his dream is to represent South Africa at the highest level.
