Young runner in need of community support

Sometimes the most inspiring stories begin at the most unexpected places.

Fifteen-year-old Lucas Beza has become a familiar and inspirational figure at the Ruimsig parkrun, despite the challenges he faces at home.

Living with his parents and siblings on top of a steep hill in difficult circumstances, Lucas grew up cheering on runners as they passed his home each Saturday – offering high-fives and dreaming of joining them one day.

According to long-time resident and parkrunner Shelley Kerrigan, Lucas and his siblings would often stand along the route, hoping for a sandwich or small treat from passing runners. Inspired by the energy of the events, Lucas finally decided to give running a try in October.

Shelley soon became a pivotal figure in his journey.

“I’ve known Lucky and his son Lucas for many years,” she said.

“One Saturday, I told Lucas to come to me. I registered him and his little cousin for the parkrun and bought them proper running shoes, shorts and socks. From day one, he was so eager – and last week he broke his personal best. He’s incredibly talented. I’m really hoping someone can take him under their wing because I don’t have the energy to do that myself anymore.”

Lucas recently achieved a personal best at the parkrun on Saturday, November 22, finishing fifth out of 344 runners with a time of 21:25 – an impressive milestone for a newcomer with no formal training.

Thanks to Shelley’s support, he now runs safely and with confidence, but he still needs sponsors to help him continue improving, particularly with running shoes and guidance. Parkrun volunteer Nadine Crouch believes Lucas has the potential to become a standout athlete with the right backing.

Lucas is also active in school sports and hopes to win medals in the future. Beyond athletics, he dreams of becoming a soldier.

Despite the obstacles he faces at such a young age, Lucas’s story is one of hope, dedication and resilience – and a reminder of how community support can change a life.
