Young Roodepoort fighter ready to claim his future
Kickboxing star aims for various titles, starting with the K1 World Championship.
In the heart of Roodepoort’s township fight scene, where raw talent meets relentless ambition, a young athlete is crafting a story defined by power, discipline, and purpose.
Thando Mahlangu (20) first stepped into a boxing gym in his neighbourhood after being invited by a friend. The environment was harsh at first as he faced tough methods and the constant fear of being hit, and later found a passion that shaped the course of his life.
He stands as one of South Africa’s most electrifying young fighters and the newly crowned WKS Africa Pro-Am Champion. His rise in kickboxing is propelled by a combination of explosive ability, unwavering dedication, and a powerful sense of purpose rooted in family and faith.
Thando describes his fighting style as explosive and counterattacking, built around his natural knockout power.
“My boxing style or my fighting style is more explosive and counterattacking. My strength is in my power because I can hit very hard. I’m very strong, and my weakness is that I show off because I just turn up to fight a win and go home,” he said.

His toughest challenge came against Muay Thai athlete Brian Ncube, whose different fighting style forced him to adapt under pressure. That fight taught him the value of long-term preparation and opened his eyes to how much more he is capable of. It also reinforced his belief in never stopping the pursuit of new skills.
The aspiring kickboxing star trains twice a day for four days a week, with added sparring sessions on three days. Saturdays also include an additional session. Everything in his life is built around training. The toughest part of his regimen is padwork, where his coach pushes him to his limits. But Thando endures it with mental grit, knowing those sessions sharpen him into a better, stronger fighter.
“What drives me to step into the ring is my passion for fighting and my love for fighting. I know that I am doing this for my family,” Thando added.
Despite his knockout power, Thando’s strategy is grounded in trust and structure. He listens to his coach Wade Rendell, whom he credits as the biggest influence on his career. While his preferred plan is to finish his opponents with a knockout, he always follows the strategy carefully crafted in his corner and stays adaptable when the fight doesn’t unfold as expected.
When he is not fighting, he dedicates himself to uplifting his community. He trains young fighters who lack resources, offering his time and skills for free. He also spends time with children in his neighbourhood, motivating them and showing them that big dreams are possible no matter where you start. Though many see only the fighter, he wishes people knew he is actually a friendly, cheerful person who loves making connections with others.
Thando earned the proudest moment of his career by becoming the WKS Africa Pro-Am Champion in Cape Town, held in December. Despite the recent achievement, his goals reach far beyond the continent. He wants to become a K1 World Champion and eventually an MMA World Champion in the UFC or ONE Championship.
He is preparing for the WKS Championship with confidence, believing he will bring home the world title. He plans to enter the K1 professional ranks and rise toward a world championship.
