Looking to try a new sport? Try canoeing

Florida Lake Canoe Club continues to offer free canoeing lessons to the community.

The Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) will again this year continue offering free canoeing lessons starting mid-January, running until March.

These lessons are open to anyone who can swim, and all equipment and coaching will be provided. They will also cover basic canoeing skills, including paddling, turning, and managing the boat.

According to Jennie Dallas, the development coach and safety officer at FLCC, the club has a rich history of promoting inclusivity and accessibility in water sports.

“Since 1993, we’ve been arranging swimming lessons for children to ensure they can participate in canoeing and other water activities,” she said.

The free lessons aim to introduce people to canoeing, allowing them to try the sport without committing to equipment purchases or membership fees.

“Many people don’t know what it’s like to canoe, so we’re allowing them to try it,” Jennie explained.

The lessons will take place every Sunday from 14:00 at the lake, and interested community members can make a booking by calling 082 857 8571.

Community members are advised to bring dry, warm clothes to change into after the lesson, as you’ll likely get wet, and a towel to dry off.
