Ruimsig Stadium set to receive a refurbishment

Ruimsig Stadium is set for a revival as the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) moves ahead with refurbishment plans to restore the venue and boost its community use.

On Tuesday, March 10, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Community Development Department invited residents to discuss the refurbishment project aimed at restoring the state of Ruimsig Stadium.

According to Ward 97 councillor Jacques Hoon, this project will provide short-term job opportunities to residents and upgrade the stadium for community use, which includes sports, recreational activities and local events.

“The refurbishment will ensure a safer, more functional, and aesthetically improved facility for all users, fostering greater engagement and participation from the surrounding community,” said Hoon.

CoJ Community Development project manager Nonvuyo Ndlovu presented a proposed Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) work package framework that outlines areas that this project aims to restore.

The department has tabled an overall budget of R3m for this project. The appointed SMME is expected to restore several parts of the stadium, which include the following:

• repair of the stadium roof
• refurbishment of ceilings inside the building
• general painting of the building
• sanding and painting of doors
• plastering of damaged walls
• installation of tiling and carpets throughout the stadium building

Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications at the Roodepoort Civic Centre, 100 Christiaan de Wet Road, Florida Park. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed before an appointment is made.

The appointed CLO is expected to perform in the following key areas:

• Communicate between key stakeholders, the community, and workers employed on the project
• Liaison with other service providers operating in the area
• Identify and facilitate available local resources to meet the main contractor’s needs
• Compile and continuously update a database of local resources
• Assist the contractor’s CLO staff in the management of workers
• Report monthly to the city and community structures with respect to progress on reaching local labour targets, training and equity status of employees

Hoon said this project begin when a CLO has been appointed and will not cause disruptions to the track area where athletes normally train. The work is limited to the stadium building, and it is not expected to affect public access or use of the facility.
