From kata to mountain hikes: Inside a weekend at Gasshuku camp
The karate club attended their 19th Gasshuku camp in Magaliesburg.
At every start of the new year, karateka from Horizon Karate Centre attend the Gasshuku camp, spending a weekend training in the beautiful mountainous region of Magaliesburg.
This Japanese training retreat, which directly translates to ‘lodging and training,’ is a highlight of the centre’s calendar, fostering camaraderie and discipline among participants.

According to Sensei Wendy Wannenburg (7th Dan), this year’s camp, which happened in early January, was the centre’s 19th Gasshuku, and they are looking forward to celebrating the 20th next year.
She said the camp’s main focus is karate training and character building, with participants learning how to endure hours of training. Participants also learn new Kata and refine knowledge that they already have, while also bonding with fellow dojo members.

“During the camp, students as young as five years old engage in intense training, team-building activities, and outdoor adventures, including a hike and obstacle courses. The weekend is filled with events like 1 000 punches up the mountain at 06:00 and training sessions in the swimming pool,” she said.
