Fleurhof runners battle-ready for Comrades

Nine runners from Fleurhof Runners Athletics Club are set to tackle the ultimate human race.

Fleurhof Runners Athletics Club is battle-ready for the Comrades Marathon, with nine of its members prepared to tackle the up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg this Sunday, June 14.

The team hosted a send-off run and braai at Shell Garage on Thursday, May 28, to celebrate and motivate the runners ahead of the world-renowned ultra-marathon.

As part of the club’s tradition, members participated in a 15km community run before gathering for speeches and words of encouragement from fellow athletes and supporters.

Club chairperson Makgaba Manabile said the number of runners participating this year has declined due to the unprecedented demand for entries.

“We have seen a decline in participation because some of our members missed out when entries sold out within 10 hours of opening. It was the fastest Comrades entry sell-out in the race’s history,” said Manabile.

He also added that the club does not have any novices or green numbers participating due to the demand for entries.

MacDonald Maloka, who is going for his back-to-back medal, said he is ready and is hoping to finish better than his first one, which he completed in 11:45:00.

“My first one was tough because it was my first time, and I didn’t know the route. I don’t have an estimated time of finishing, but I’m planning to take it easy,” he said.

Beyond preparing runners for races, the club continues to focus on growing athletics within the community.

The club has successfully attracted runners from different age groups and is exploring opportunities to collaborate with local schools to nurture young talent and encourage healthy lifestyles from an early age.

As race day approaches, Manabile shared a message of encouragement to the athletes.

“The Comrades journey is unique to every runner; however, the spirit is the same. As you line up at the start, remember that you are not alone. Fellow club members are cheering for you in Fleurhof, while others will support you along the route and at the finish line. In true Fleurhof style, you have trained for this race, and you will finish what you started.”

The club wished all nine runners a safe and successful race as they prepared to take on the ultimate human race, carrying the hopes and support of the Fleurhof community.
